Notes

BIOGRAPHY: From http://freepages. genealogy.rootsweb.com/~notiones/index.html:
Occupation: Farmer

BIOGRAPHY: Comments: b. Abt 1797 in Newberry District, SC. Spent a little time in Edgefield Co., SC Abt 1830 before moving to MS in Abt 1845 with his new wife Rachel.

BIOGRAPHY: Notes for Rueben Morgan (Jr.) Compiled by David Webb. Reuben Jr.'s land in Newberry Co., SC was joined by the lands of Jacob Schumpert, Walter Herbert and John Paysinger. A book titled 'The Rising Sun' printed in 1859 in Newberry mentioned the recent (within the decade) departures of a number of families including the Colemans, Schumperts, Horneys, Moores, Scruggs, and Morgans. The Schumperts of Newberry were allied to the Morgans through proximity, religion, and marriage. They are still one of the closest families (in friendship and not far in location) to my branch of the Morgans, but have not intermarried as far as I can tell.
His first two children (Sarah Elizabeth and Nancy) seem to have never come to Mississippi. His first wife probably died soon after their marriage.
Rueben and Rachel moved to Mississippi between 1845 and 1849.
On April 10, 1848, Thomas Ragland and his wife Eliza A. Ragland sold to Reuben Morgan Jr. 160 acres of land for $365.12. On July 19, 1851, Lindsey and Susan C. Johnston sold to Reuben Morgan 80 acres of land for $500 in hand. On Dec. 11 (or 17), 1859, E.G. (or E.L.) Jordan and wife Mildred Jordan sold to Reuben Morgan 160.1 acres of land for $2000 in hand.
Census records show him in 1850 in (then) Itawamba Co. His farm was next to John Edwards and his wife Mary. The Edwards' daughter Ann was 20 at the time of the census and Reuben's eldest son Elias was 22. They would marry soon afterwards.
As a land owner, Reuben owned slaves, though we do not know how many or how he treated them. Some of their names were a girl named Mary, a girl named Ann, and a boy named Dick. He also owned a woman named Patsy and a woman named Edny and her child Elviry.
Reuben is believed (by many of the descendants) to be buried at Palestine Cemetery, Lee Co., Mississippi, with no marker. It is my (DAW) belief that he is there, given the proximity of the cemetery to the land that he owned. There really isn't another nearby cemetery, though Mrs. Collins believed that he might be buried further down in the bottoms east of Palestine in some other cemetery, name not known to me.
His land and slaves were sold at the time of his death to pay his debts. His son Elias bought land nearby, but either could not or chose not to buy the land that his father had owned. Much of Elias' land has stayed in family hands, though it is broken up among the many Morgans and descendants.

BIOGRAPHY: 1830 Newberry County, South Carolina Census
1 Male under 5 years - Elias (3)
1 Male 10 to 15 - ?
1 Male 30 to 40 - Reubin Jr.

1 Female 70 to 80 - Mother of Reubin?
Slaves: 1 Female 24 to 35 (total of 7 slaves)

BIOGRAPHY: Commentary by Mrs. Mertis Finley Collins:
In this census we have proven that the one male under 5 years is Elias, Reubin's youngest son by his first marriage. The female 5 to 10 is Sarah Elizabeth. The male 10 to 15 has not been identified as yet. The female 10 to 15 is Nancy. The male 30 to 40 is Reubin, born in 1797. The female 70 to 80 is the mother of Rubin as shown in the 1800 Census of Newberry County. There was no wife at this time. She had already died. The father of Rubin was likely already dead also.

BIOGRAPHY: Commentary by Mertis Finley Collins:
This copy of the 1840 Census of Edgefield County of S.C. shows that during the ten years between 1830 and 1840 Rubin Morgan had moved to this district, remarried, and fathered five children. His mother was no longer living with him. The three males under 5 are John B. and the twins Rubin Dale and Hozie Bud. The female under 5 is Neomi. The male between 10 and 15 is Elias. The female between 5 and 10 is Temperance. The male between 20 and 30 years is the same one that has not been identified in the 1830 census. The two females between 20 and 30 are Nancy and Sarah Elizabeth. The male 40 to 50 is Rubin the father and the female 30 to 40 is his second wife, Rachel Berry Morgan.

BIOGRAPHY: In the 1850 Itawamba Slave Schedule, Rubin Morgan was listed with 1 slave.
In the 1860 Itawamba Slave Schedule, Reubin Morgan was listed with 3 slaves.

BIOGRAPHY: One descendant has repeated a story that Reuben found a white boy in an Indian camp and they brought him along with them and he was Elias. This, to me, is extremely suspect. There is no proof and it was not commonly known.

BIOGRAPHY: From Mrs. Myrtis Finley's book in 1976:
The family of Morgans that came from Reubin Morgan who lived and reared his family and set some up for a life in Richmond Community died in 1862 at the start of the Civil War and lived not too far from this [Gaither Cemetery/Old Hussey Cemetery] cemetery. The family has been told that he was buried in this cemetery. His grave has not been found. It was hard to get markers at that time. His male family was in the service.
It is very likely that the truth will never be proven but could well be hidden in this little cemetery. I have never been able to find any reason for the name Gaither but the land may have belonged to a family by that name.

BIOGRAPHY: Rubin Morgan (the second) was born in 1797 in S.C. and died July 5, 1862 in Mississippi. He married the first time likely about 1820 in S.C. to a S.C. woman. She died between 1828 and 1830 leaving 3 small children or 4 for there is a son that may be the oldest that has not been found yet. The 1830 census shows Rubin without a wife. His mother aged between 75 and 80 is with him. She was born between 1750-1755 as shown by the census. His property was sold on the 3rd of July 1873, as shown in Chencery Minutes, Itawamba County, Miss. We think the son aged 10 to 15 in the 1830 census did not come to Miss. with his father. He may have lived south of the area in later years. He may have died.

BIOGRAPHY: Mississippi Journal - March 7, 1874
Notice in paper of the estate of Rueben Morgan proceedings.
Notes for Rachel Berry
Rachel had two sisters, Hannah and Ella, and one brother, John, who never married.
Rachel as living in Saltillo, Miss. in the home of her youngest son, Joseph Pope Morgan in 1880 as shown by the census.
This might mean that Rachel was buried nearby. Charles Patterson suggests that she was possibly buried in the Bulah Cemetery on Old Saltillo Road. Sarah Merchant is nearby.
